Bob’s Advice for when Your Parents are Getting a Divorce

DEAR BOB CAT,

My parents are getting a divorce. I don’t know what to do. I feel like my whole world is breaking.

-8-Year-Old

DEAR 8-YEAR-OLD,

Thank you for sharing. I’m sorry to hear about your parents getting a divorce. Right now, you feel like your whole world is breaking, but later on, you will see that your world is different from the divorce, but you are still okay. You will be able to create a nice life for yourself. You shared your feelings with me, and that is a great start. I encourage you to share your feelings with other people who you trust.

I also want you to know that when your parents get a divorce, it is not your fault, and you could not have stopped or prevented it. Another important point is that they both love you just the same. And another thing is that you will be okay.

You are not alone. Most kids go through their parent, or parents, getting a divorce.

If you don’t start to feel better about your life and your world soon, you could talk to your school counselor. Or, you could ask one of your parents to make an appointment for you with the counselor. I heard that this book is a good one for helping kids deal with their parents’ divorce.

My best advice is to hang in there and keep doing the best that you can, one day at a time.

Sincerely,

-Bob
